Necklift (platysmaplasty)

Neck lift is a general term referring to the tightening of neck skin and underlying tissues in order to restore a more youthful appearance. It may be combined with facelift or liposuction.

Necklift (Platysmaplasty) - Who needs a necklift?

After the age of forty the face and neck begin to show the effect of gravity, sun exposure and stress with the appearance of deep creases, folds and loose skin. The necklift procedure is very good for restoring the youthful angle of the lower jaw, tightening the loose skin of the neck and improving the mouth-to-nose lines.

Necklift (Platysmaplasty) - The Operation

There are a number of different surgical techniques for necklift (Platysmaplasty) that have evolved with increasing demand for this type of surgery and surgeons’ quest for better results. A general anaesthetic is required usually and it lasts 3 hours.

The necklift operation is carried out through standard incisions running from in front of and behind the ear and back into the hairline. A small incision under the chin may also be necessary. The muscle tightening necklift remains the mainstay at the present time. Liposuction may be added in selected cases to improve the definition of the jaw line.

Necklift (Platysmaplasty) - The Risks

When making a decision about having cosmetic surgery, it is important to weigh up the pros and cons, especially because cosmetic surgery is not medically necessary and the benefit can be measured purely in psychological terms only. You need to inform Ms Kavouni about any medical conditions that might affect the surgery such as high blood pressure, clotting problems or any medication, especially aspirin.

As with any surgery, the necklift procedure is subject to complications, which although uncommon do occur. These include bruising, collection of blood beneath the skin, infection, poor wound healing, poor scars, numbness and injury to the nerves that control the muscles of the face. Smoking in particular may cause problems with skin healing so it is imperative to stop smoking at least two weeks before and after surgery.

It is important to discuss these points with Ms kavouni during the initial consultation. She should be able to answer all your questions as well as describe alternative forms of treatment, so that you can decide whether you want to go ahead with the necklift surgery.

Necklift (Platysmaplasty) - After the Operation

The stay in hospital is one night and sutures are removed 7 to 10 days later. Most patients experience mild discomfort after the necklift procedure but significant pain is unusual. Bruising, swelling and numbness may be present up to three weeks post-operatively, depending on the extent and type of surgery.

The settling down process is a long one and may take several months. However, with proper make-up the patient should be presentable two to three weeks after surgery and able to return to work. The necklift scars are hidden in the hair or the skin creases around the ears and they continue to improve for many months.

The overall result of a necklift or platysmaplasty procedure depends on many factors, such as surgeon’s skill and experience, patient’s age, condition of skin, severity of skin laxity and of course the patient’s expectations. Most patients are greatly satisfied and the effects of a fresher and youthful appearance are maintained for 5-10 years.
